Pola Negri, Paris, ca. 1920 (date unknown).
This is a rare candid photograph taken by by noted French photographer G.L. Manuel Freres. It depicts a very natural Pola–minimal facial make-up and her wonderful painted-on eyebrows. Rather a far cry from her movie star look, don’t you think? Of course, her jet black hair is topped by a white turban. According to lore, she popularized the wearing of the turban in the 1920’s, but she confessed in an interview that it wasn’t intentional on her part. She was running late for a party, had no time to dry her hair, and simply wrapped a long scarf around. VOILA! Instant fashion icon. This is what she really looked like under it all. Still lovely.
