Here is Pola Negri in “Bella Donna” (1923)–just as Paramount wanted you to see her:  as the foreign exotic.  Their publicity worked TOO well in a xenophobic era when small town America wanted nothing to do with “foreigners” or “foreign ideas” and someone like Miss Negri was considered “dangerous” for her licentious sex appeal (Lore has it that she had to be taught to kiss “chastely” for movie love scenes).   I think Pola looks great in this shot, the very definition of a temptress in her desert harem girl outfit.
