This is a portrait of Pola Negri from 1931 around the time that she was filming her talkie debut, “A Woman Commands” for RKO/Pathe. It’s almost Art Deco in feel. Pola looks sleek and modern–after enduring some unkind remarks concerning her weight gain during and after her marriage to Serge Mdivani–and younger than her 34 years. It was too bad that the picture tanked, ending her career as a Hollywood leading lady. This portrait, however, is immortal.
